The purpose of the chief directorate is to conduct research through independent service providers to assess how the government should address the public's information needs.

The Chief Director's functions include:

  • Monitoring and evaluating the overall functioning of the Department for continuous improvement of communication units of government departments.
  • Monitoring national and international media coverage affecting government and the country.
  • Conducting public opinion research and providing a knowledge management service in order to enhance effective government communication.
  • Providing knowledge management and information resource services to the department.

The directorate’s main purpose is the monitoring of national and international media coverage affecting government and the country, as well as the development of key messages, opinion pieces and communication content.

The CRC's functions clude:

  • Daily monitoring of national and international media coverage affecting government and the country;
  • Providing regular and issue-based national and international media coverage reports;
  • Providing a clipping service of selected national and regional newspapers;
  • Alerting internal and external stakeholders of breaking news in national and international media affecting government and the country;
  • Producing key messages, opinion pieces and other communication content as and when required.

The purpose of the Directorate: Government Communication Monitoring and Evaluation is to monitor and evaluate overall functioning of the government communication system for continuous improvement of communication units of government departments.

  • Providing strategic guidance on media content analysis of selected priorities and programmes of govemment.
  • Government communication projects.
  • Managing all aspects of the Government Communication Policy.

The functions of the Directorate include:

  • ongoing research to assess the communication environment, both in general and for specific communication campaigns and/or projects;
  • research to assess the impact of government communication efforts;
  • ongoing research to ascertain communication preferences and information needs;
  • enhancing access to communication research;
  • providing research advice to internal and external government clients.

The purpose of this directorate is to provide content and knowledge management as well as an information resource services to the department.

The functions of the Directorate includre:

  • Developing strategic communication frameworks which Includes the National Communications Strategy Framework as well as The Presidency Communications Framework.
  • Harvesting of content to develop reports, which serve at strategic forums such FOSAD, Cabinet Makgotla as well as the GSCID Cluster.
  • Providing Information and Knowledge Management Services for GCIS projects which includes development of research insights.
  • Managing the GCIS Knowledge Management System/ Programme.
  • Sourcing and maintaining of resources in support of information services to the GCIS Library.
