Media Engagement's purpose is to lead and drive interaction and communication between government and the media. Functions of the Chief Director include:
- Managing ongoing domestic and international media engagement support and strategic advice services to the government
- Protecting, defending and maintaining the image of government and the state
- Providing support for the GCIS Director-General's role as the Government Spokesperson and coordination of parliamentary questions.

Parliamentary Liaison Services provides support for the GCIS Director-General's role as the Government Spokesperson and coordination of parliamentary questions.
The functions of Parliamentary Liaison Services include:
- Providing support to the DG of the GCIS in her role as the Government Spokesperson whilst in Cape Town.
- Rendering media liaison services to government departments in Parliament, monitoring parliamentary processes, including parliamentary questions and identifies communication needs.
- Providing government information to Members of Parliament, the media and the public through its Information Resource Centre.
