Following the recent changes to the National Executive of the Republic of South Africa, President Kgalema Motlanthe has appointed new members to serve on the board of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Organising Committee of South Africa.

This follows the resignations of former Minister in the Presidency Dr Essop Pahad, former Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi and former deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi.

The new members are Provincial and Local Government Minister Sicelo Shiceka, deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Sue van der Merwe, deputy Safety and Security Minister Susan Shabangu and Treasury Director-General Lesetja Kganyago.

The government thanks the former members for their contribution to the preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

We remain confident that South Africa will meet all the requirements set by FIFA.

The government welcomes the findings of the FIFA/LOC team that conducted a ten-day inspection tour of all ten World Cup stadiums in the past two weeks.

The team indicated that South Africa was well on course to meet the FIFA deadlines.

“Overall we are happy with what we have seen in the facilities. Very encouraging progress has been made in particular at the six new stadiums since the last visits. They will be amazing football jewels in 2010. The great engagement from the cities proves that we are on the right track”, said Ron Del Mont, head of FIFA’s South Africa office.

The government of the Republic of South Africa furthermore pledges its continued commitment to work closely with all stakeholders involved in the organising of the event, to ensure that it becomes a resounding success.
