Government calls on South Africans to continue being good hosts

Government appeals to the nation to continue rallying behind the country’s hosting of the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Government spokesperson Themba Maseko says: “We are still in the initial stages of the tournament. And this is not the time to pull back, regardless of the disappointment we may feel after Bafana Bafana’s loss to Uruguay on 16 June 2010.”

South African Police ready to protect all

On the eve before South Africa hosts the greatest show on earth, the South African Police Service (SAPS) assures all within the country’s borders, citizens and visitors alike that normal services will be rendered and policing continues.

Government spokesperson Themba Maseko today said, “Of the country’s 190 000 police officers, only 40 000 have been allocated to World Cup operations.  These officers will be supported by their counterparts from the 32 participating teams.”

As the 16 Days of Activism Campaign on No Violence against Women and Children reaches its half-way mark, Government calls on all stakeholders to intensify efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence and child abuse including the shocking incident of rape of a 7-year-old girl at a primary school in Soweto on Monday.

Police should ensure that culprit(s) involved in this incident is brought to book and support is provided to the girl and her family to deal with the trauma.

Pretoria – South Africa will this year observe the 10th anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign, which starts on 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) and close on 10 December 2009 (International Human Rights Day).
