South Africa has never experienced any democracy until 1994 and no South African or any formation in our society can stand to claim monopoly to know more than all of us as South Africans. We are all learning and building this democracy together and that includes supporting, protecting and respecting all institutions of state we have established in promotion of our constitutional democracy. We call on all South Africans to contribute to this objective.

Minister in The Presidency, Collins Chabane has noted repeated calls in the media calling for the removal of Mr Jimmy Manyi from his position. This follows statements he made last year which had implications on the country’s race relations. Mr Manyi has since apologised for his statements and for the offence they have caused.

Certain Cabinet Ministers' offices have yesterday received enquiries from the media asking whether their Ministers have been to the Gupta family’s house or know of any Ministers who have been.

Government views these questions as an irresponsible fishing expedition that amounts to the violation of the privacy of Ministers. Also, we find it highly irresponsible and beyond the scope of the media’s role to monitor the private movement of Ministers. We do not have to elaborate on the security implications of this behaviour.

Interest groups have an opportunity to raise their views on the Employment Equity Amendment Bill within the Nedlac forum, rather than to focus the public debate on the Government Spokesperson, Jimmy Manyi and mislead the public.

Government has noted a front page article in the Sunday Independent, 20 February 2011 edition, reporting about a supposed “clash” between Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele and Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane “over toll charges”.

Government would like to put it on record that there is no clash between Minister Ndebele and Premier Mokonyane – or any other clash within the leadership of government – about the soon-to-be-launched tollgate system in Gauteng.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Cabinet today approved the appointment of Mr Brian Molefe as Group Chief Executive of Transnet, and as an ex officio member of the Transnet Board of Directors, with immediate effect. The appointment will be for a period of five years.

Government has noted this morning’s media reports suggesting lack of originality in a proposed new country slogan to market the country as a tourism and investment destination as well as the expenditure to develop the country’s pay-off line.
