Cabinet held its last meeting of the year yesterday, 4 December and appreciation was expressed at the work done during the course of 2002. A comprehensive review of the year, and consideration of plans for the coming period will take place at the Cabinet lekgotla in mid-January.
Government wishes to take this opportunity to wish all South Africans a happy holiday period and a productive New Year, and all of the best during Eid and Christmas.

Cabinet today received a briefing on the work of a Task Team made up of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Departments of Health, Home Affairs and Social Development on the causes of death in South Africa between 1997 and 2001. The research was commissioned by Cabinet to help identify challenges with regard to such issues as the impact of road accidents, violence, HIV/AIDS, TB and other causes of death.

Cabinet was briefed today on the Language Policy Framework for Higher Education and it approved the broad approach in dealing with this matter. This includes the development of other South African languages, in addition to English and Afrikaans, for use as scientific/academic languages, and promotion of the study of languages and literature in Higher Education.
