Statement on Cabinet meeting of 25 July 2001

Following its lekgotla earlier this week, Cabinet held a brief ordinary meeting on Wednesday evening (25 July 2001).

The meeting adopted a plan for the re-organisation of Technical Colleges to respond to the human resource needs of the country. This will include the merger of a number of these colleges into Further Education Training (FET) Colleges under the relevant Act. However, no sites of teaching and learning will be closed in this process.

Cabinet today received a report on developments around South African Airways. A full statement on this matter is attached.

The meeting also considered a number of matters pertaining to the restructuring of other State-owned enterprises, including welcome progress towards Telkom’s Initial Public Offering, immediate action with regard to aspects of SAFCOL, and a vision for the development and transformation of DENEL.

Cabinet today noted the findings of the report of the consultants on the evaluation of the performance of New Zealand Post International Limited, the strategic management partner in the SA Post Office (SAPO) Limited. It also noted the legal opinion provided to the Board of SA Post Office regarding the possible termination of the strategic management contract, because of problems of non-compliance with the agreement between the two entities.

Cabinet was today briefed on progress in the preparations for the UN World Conference against Racism, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.

While welcoming the steps that have been taken to put in place requisite logistical arrangements, the meeting called for the widest possible involvement of the South Africa population in discussions around the issues which will be tabled at Conference.

Cabinet today received a report on progress regarding implementation of the Human Resource Development Strategy. It was agreed that various Departments would nominate co-ordinators for various areas which would receive priority attention. The HRDS Team, led by the Departments of Labour and Education, will report to Cabinet on these matters on a quarterly basis.
