Government is fast-tracking relief efforts in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality following the devastating floods that destroyed homes, and displaced families, and led to the loss of lives.

A Ministerial delegation representative of all the spheres of government conducted an oversight visit to flood-stricken areas in Gqeberha on Wednesday, 05 June 2024, to bolster government’s urgent responses following the torrential rains that caused massive damage to infrastructure, displacing over 1000 households, and claiming the lives of at least ten people.

Government welcomes the successful conclusion of the 2024 national and provincial elections which ushers in the seventh democratic administration in the 30 years of our freedom and democracy. This marks a watershed feet in the journey of our inclusive and participatory democracy as espoused by the Electoral Amendment Act 1 of 2023.  

South Africa’s seventh democratic general national and provincial elections are an affirmation of the maturity and strength of our democracy. It signifies the vibrant commitment of the people to advancing our freedom and democracy. 

The citizens have honoured their civic responsibility to make their voices heard by freely voting for the party or candidate that best represents their interests and aspirations for our country. 

2024 elections conclude on a peaceful note

Government welcomes the inspiring smooth start to the 2024 national and provincial general elections. Tens of thousands of South Africans have already cast their vote, affirming the strength and vibrancy of our democracy.

All systems are in place to ensure that South Africans will have an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote on Wednesday 29 May 2024. A number of measures have been put in place so that citizens can safely and securely cast their vote in the year that the country celebrates 30 Years of Freedom.

The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster will host a media briefing on the work underway to address challenges raised by truck drivers, unions and associations.

Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) will host a panel discussion to address the impact of Misinformation and Disinformation during an elections period as part of a National Communication Partnership (NCP).

The NCP is premised on the need for a joint effort around creating awareness of the perils of misinformation and disinformation across society and in all creative and communication disciplines.

The Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and Brand South Africa invite members of the media to participate in a virtual panel discussion on Tourism opportunities in the SADC region during Africa month.
