1.1.1 President Jacob Zuma will undertake an official visit to Jamaica from  4-6 August 2012 to enhance bilateral relations. The visit, which includes the 50th anniversary celebrations of Jamaica’s independence, will serve to recognise the role Jamaica has played during South Africa’s struggle for liberation, as well as to celebrate Jamaica’s achievements as an independent, stable constitutional democracy.

Government has noted that recent media coverage on road traffic fines regarding state vehicles have indicated a lack of understanding of the National Road Traffic Act No. 93 of 1996.

The Act clearly explains the transgression of traffic laws, and that certain drivers may exceed the general speed limit.

Government and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) met in Johannesburg today, 20 July 2012, to discuss possible solutions to servicing debt associated with the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

The meeting at Cosatu House in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, was part of ongoing stakeholder consultation by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the GFIP, chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Yesterday marked former President Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday, which is also internationally recognised with the United Nations having declared 18 July (since November 2009) ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’.

Cabinet wished Madiba a happy birthday and called on all South Africans to spend at least 67 minutes doing good work in their communities.

Government joins all South Africans and the international community in wishing our Founding President Nelson Mandela a happy 94^th birthday, and in celebrating his life and legacy.

Madiba is special to South Africa in many ways, having dedicated his entire adult life to the relentless fight for freedom, democracy, peace and stability in our country.

As the first President of a democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela immediately led the nation on a path of unity, transformation, forgiveness and reconciliation.
