South Africa’s state of readiness to host Africa’s very first soccer world cup tournament came under the spotlight during a discussion between government representatives, 2010 World Cup organisers and international media in Vienna, Austria.

A media face-off with CNN was held on the sidelines of the EURO 2008 soccer tournament between Deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi, SA Tourism CEO Moeketsi Mosola and Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan.

Thusong Service Centres, formerly known as Multi Purpose Community Centres, have played a leading role in strengthening citizen’s access to government services which impact on their daily lives.

Rolled out over the past nine years in previously under-serviced areas by government, civil society partners and private sector bodies, these centres have made it easier for citizens to access ID documents, birth and marriage certificates, computer training, health services and UIF applications, among others.

In a continued effort to ensure the aligned and strategic marketing of brand South Africa, the ministers responsible for the international marketing of destination South Africa, Minister Essop Pahad and Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, have announced their agreement to look at a comprehensive and effective way to market South Africa domestically and abroad.

Minister in the Office of the Presidency Essop Pahad has reiterated government's commitment to improving the living conditions of the disabled.

Speaking in Jane Furse, Limpopo during an Imbizo held as part of the government's Imbizo Week programme, he said government was doing all possible to meet its 2010 deadline of employing a minimum of two percent public servants with disabilities.

At its meeting this morning, Cabinet endorsed the proposal that the 2nd of May 2008 be declared a public holiday, to compensate workers for losing a public holiday as a result of Human Rights Day falling on the same day as Good Friday.

This decision follows proposals from a number of stakeholders including trade unions.

The Cabinet Lekgotla which is currently meeting at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria, Tshwane, has conveyed condolences to the families of former President of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and Member of Parliament, John Gomomo as well as His Grace, Bishop David Nkwe, both of whom passed away today.

Our assessment is that this is the work of peddlers who were linked to the “Browser report’ who are desperately trying to implicate, discredit and cast aspersions on government institutions.

As stated previously, this enquiry is established in terms of Section 12 (6) (a) of the National Prosecuting Authority 32 of 1998.
