Government respects the rights of any organised formation or individuals to engage in public demonstration. Government believes that those engaging in public demonstration should do so within the law.

Government will not tolerate destruction of property or disregard for the effort that goes into making South Africa a better place. Government calls on those who will be taking part in the planned march to act within the law.

Government calls for order at e-toll marches

Government will closely monitor tomorrow's planned marches by Cosatu and members of the public against e-tolling as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

Cosatu has obtained permission to stage marches in Johannesburg and Pretoria tomorrow, Friday, November 30.

However, this does not change the fact that government has consulted and shared information on the GFIP project over a number of years and called for public comment.

The Deputy Minister of Police,Ms Makhotso Sotyu, SAPS Divisional Commissioner for Operations Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and the Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mr Mvuzo Mbebe today assured South Africans that the 29th Edition of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2013 tournament will be safe and secure.

The assurance was made during a media briefing on the national security plans state of readiness for the AFCON, in Pretoria this morning.

The Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa and the Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mr Mvuzo Mbebe will brief media on the national security and health state of readiness for the 29th Orange Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2013 tournament.

AFCON is the football championship of Africa organised by the Confederation of African Football and South Africa will host the tournament from 19 January to 10 February 2013 in five provinces.

Government responds to the 2012 UNAIDS Report

Government is humbled by the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS 2012 World AIDS Day report released yesterday.  

According to the report, South Africa increased its scale of HIV treatment by 75%, ensuring 1.7 million people had access to the lifesaving treatment leading to a decrease of more than 50 000 (41%) in new HIV infections in the past two years.
