Joint media briefing on national security and health state of readiness for 29th Orange Africa Cup of Nations: 27 Nov

The Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa and the Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mr Mvuzo Mbebe will brief media on the national security and health state of readiness for the 29th Orange Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2013 tournament.

AFCON is the football championship of Africa organised by the Confederation of African Football and South Africa will host the tournament from 19 January to 10 February 2013 in five provinces.

Government responds to the 2012 UNAIDS Report

Government is humbled by the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS 2012 World AIDS Day report released yesterday.  

According to the report, South Africa increased its scale of HIV treatment by 75%, ensuring 1.7 million people had access to the lifesaving treatment leading to a decrease of more than 50 000 (41%) in new HIV infections in the past two years.

Government delighted with Mngeni ruling

Government welcomes the Western Cape High Court ruling which found Xolile Mngeni guilty of the premeditated murder of Anni Dewani.

We commend the judicial system and Judge Robert Henney for his tireless effort and commitment to this case. The ruling in this case is a lesson to many other perpetrators who commit crimes against children and women in particular.
This ruling is a milestone for the judicial system, and reaffirms that crime is not to be tolerated in South Africa.

Government ensures that service providers are paid on time

The Department for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation as well as Administration, in collaboration with National Treasury, has set up a system to track compliance by national and provincial departments on the payments of service providers within the stipulated timeframe of 30 working days.

The system is still on a test stage, and Departments have satisfactorily responded to the use of thereof. This system will enable Government to accurately report on the payment of suppliers.

Government welcomes rhino poaching ruling

Government welcomes the 40-year prison sentence that was handed down to Thai national, Chumlong Lemtongthai, for rhino poaching. The Thai national pleaded guilty to 59 counts in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court earlier this week.

Phumla Williams, GCIS Acting CEO said, “The ruling shows that South Africa will not compromise on the preservation of our animals. The ruling indicates that crimes against Rhinos and other wildlife will not be tolerated in the country. ”

Cabinet welcomed the results of Census 2011 and commended Stats SA on the extraordinary achievement of releasing the results within 12 months.

While the results point to challenges, they also tell a convincing story of a country that has greatly developed and improved in the past 18 years.
