At its meeting today, Cabinet considered elements of the Comprehensive Plan for the Development of Sustainable Human Settlements (housing strategy). This plan, which builds on the achievements of the past decade, seeks to break new ground in terms of flexibility on such issues as access to credit and choice of top structure, upgrading of informal settlements and innovative rental options.

Cabinet yesterday (23 June 2004) welcomed the successful meeting of the International Investment Council (IIC) held over the past weekend. It noted the observations of IIC members regarding the socio-economic progress made by our country since the Council was formed in 2000, their confidence in the current policies and their appreciation of the concrete programme to take SA onto a higher growth and development path.

At its meeting today, Cabinet formally confirmed the government's Programme of Action, bringing together the detailed decisions of the Cabinet lekgotla and the public commitments contained in the President's May State of the Nation Address. An improved system of monitoring and evaluation of implementation is being put in place, and it will include reports by Ministerial/DG Clusters to Cabinet on a two-monthly basis.

At its meeting today, Cabinet received a report on the work of the Interim Management Team which was deployed to assist the Eastern Cape provincial administration in dealing with challenges facing various departments.

Cabinet held its first lekgotla after the elections on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, as well as a regular Cabinet meeting on the morning of Wednesday.

Cabinet today received a comprehensive briefing by the security agencies with regard to preparations for the general election on 14 April. The meeting expressed its appreciation of the work done by the agencies, including contingency planning hand-in-hand with the Independent Electoral Commission, to ensure that the elections are free and fair.
