Government saddened by death of former Deputy Minister of Defence

Government is deeply saddened by the passing of former Deputy Minister of Defence, Mluleki Editor George and conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the nation. Mr George passed on yesterday, 5 January 2020. He served the country as the Deputy Defence Minister with distinction from 29 April 2004 until 25 September 2008. He was a member of parliament in the National Assembly from 1994 until September 2008.

A virtual Special Cabinet Meeting was held yesterday Wednesday, 9 December 2020, to deliberate on an appointment in the Department of Tourism. Cabinet approved the appointment subject to the verification of qualifications and the relevant clearances.

Ms Mirriam Mmaditonki Setwaba was appointed Deputy Director-General: Tourism Sector Support Services at the Department of Tourism.

A. Issues In The Environment

1. Increase in Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) infections
1.1. Cabinet has expressed extreme concern about the spike in the number of new COVID-19 infections in the Eastern Cape and parts of the Western Cape. The rise in infections has been attributed to, among other factors, non-adherence to COVID-19 prevention protocols and Alert Level 1 regulations.

Government is continuing its investigation into all aspects of the escape from South Africa of Mr Shepherd and Ms Mary Bushiri

22  November 2020

Government reported last week the failure of Mr Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Ms Mary Bushiri to present themselves to their nearest police station as per their bail condition. Subsequently, the law enforcement agencies commenced the investigations and the process of seeking the extradition of the couple. Government continues to work closely with the government of the Republic of Malawi on this matter.

South Africa embarks on Bushiri extradition process

15 November 2020

Government is able to confirm that fugitives Mr Shepherd Bushiri and Ms Mary Bushiri did not leave South Africa aboard a flight on which President Lazarus Chakwera and his delegation travelled.

President Chakwera undertook a successful working visit to South Africa on Friday, 13 November 2020, during which South Africa and Malawi discussed a broad range of initiatives to strengthen relations between the governments and peoples of the two countries.
