Government rejects misleading public comments by Batsa

Government has noted with concern media statements attributed to the British American Tobacco South Africa (BATSA) to the effect that government has caused a delay in the hearing of its challenge to the ban on sales of tobacco products during Alert Level 3 of the Covid-19 national state of disaster.

Government wishes Deputy Minister Holomisa a speedy recovery

Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa, has tested positive for Coronavirus. Nkosi Holomisa is self-isolating at his residence and taking all the necessary precautions towards a full recovery. He is in good spirits and he is determined to defeat the virus which has affected thousands of South Africans thus far. All direct contacts of Nkosi Holomisa will be traced and they will be informed to quarantine.

Statement on the Virtual Cabinet Meeting held on Wednesday, 10 June 2020

1. Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

1.1. At its virtual meeting held on Wednesday, 10 June 2020, Cabinet received an updated report from the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC). The NCCC tabled a number of recommendations pertaining to the enhanced risk adjusted Alert Level 3 of the national lockdown. 

The recommendations are based on submissions made by various sectors and deliberations by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure.

1. North High Court Judgment of Tuesday, 2 June 2020

1.1. A special virtual Cabinet meeting was held today, Thursday, 4 June 2020, to discuss developments in South Africa’s efforts to save lives and protect livelihoods amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of this discussion, Cabinet reflected on the North Gauteng High Court judgment delivered by Justice Norman Davis on Tuesday, 2 June, 2020, which declared the COVID-19 lockdown regulations in levels 3 and 4 unconstitutional and invalid.

Cabinet to study judgement on Alert Level 4 & Alert Level 3 Regulations

2 June 2020

Government has taken note of the judgement delivered by the Gauteng Division of the High Court today, 2 June 2020, declaring the Alert Level 4 and Alert Level 3 Lockdown regulations unconstitutional and invalid.

The court suspended the declaration of invalidity for a period of 14 days. This means that the Alert Level 3 regulations remain in operation for now.
