No accreditation needed for public

Members of the public do not need to be accredited to attend the Memorial Service for former president Nelson Mandela at the FNB Stadiium and the viewing of his body at the Union Building.

Government has arranged free public transport and park and rides to accommodate mourners and ensure that they are able to get to the stadiums on time. Members of the public are urged to arrive at the park and ride facilities by 5:00am. No cars will be allowed near FNB Stadium and there will be road closures in place from Monday, 9 December.

Ladies and gentlemen of the media

Welcome to this briefing on 9 December 2013 – a day before the National Memorial Service for the late President Nelson Mandela will be held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. This is also a day on which we are welcoming a growing number of international leaders to South Africa.

Since we are briefing media, let me start by thanking the media for the patience you showed yesterday when you had to wait in long queues for accreditation at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

Media access to FNB Memorial Service


9 December 2013

Media are advised that the Official Memorial Service of former President Nelson Mandela will take place tomorrow, 10th December 2013 at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

The SABC is the official and host broadcaster for the memorial service. In this regard, only the SABC will be allowed access to the pitch where the main stage will be situated. Only identified pool photographers will be allowed on the pitch. All the stand up camera positions in the stadium have been allocated to relevant media houses.

Public encouraged to attend viewing sites

The official memorial service for the former President Nelson Mandela will be held on 10 December 2013 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

The memorial service will begin at 11h00. The gates, for the public, will open at 06h00.

Memorial services will also be held across the country at various places to ensure that all members of the public have an opportunity to attend.

Broadcast stand up positions at the FNB stadium

To: All Broadcasters

Government wishes to inform all members of the media that all Broadcast Media Stand-up positions at the FNB Stadium for the Memorial Service of the late former President Nelson Mandela have been allocated. However, government has made alternative arrangements for Broadcast Media stand-up positions outside the stadium next to the cooling tower.
