Government commends all South Africans for making the 2014 national and provincial elections a resounding success. The sight of millions of South Africans queuing to vote demonstrated a vibrant and maturing democracy. 

Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams said, “The elections have served to renew and strengthen our democracy.  We are pleased by the great turnout in particular first time voters. Statistics from the IEC show that more people than ever before have chosen to exercise their right to vote”.

Government thanks voters for successful and peaceful elections

Government thanks the millions of South Africans who have voted in the country’s fifth democratic elections.  We appreciate the tolerance, dignity and patience with which voters conducted themselves as they waited to cast their vote.

This demonstration of active citizenship and patriotism was also visible on 30 April 2014 when thousands of people cast special votes at 116 South African missions abroad.

Voting stations are now closed

All voting stations are now closed and voting has ended in South Africa’s fifth democratic elections. Government is satisfied that the 2014 General Elections were peaceful and took place in an atmosphere of political tolerance.

Government prioritised the safety and security of the elections and is satisfied that the security of the elections was well managed and coordinated through the National Joints Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS).

Only a few hours left to vote

Government calls upon all citizens who have not yet voted in the country’s fifth democratic elections to make their way to voting stations. Stations will close at 9pm and those queuing within the precinct will be allowed to vote.

We are pleased that South Africans in their millions have heeded the call to vote, and have conducted themselves in an orderly and respectful manner.

Government on smooth start to general elections

Government welcomes the update provided by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) at 11h00 today that shows that the 2014 national and provincial elections are well organised and proceeding peacefully. This affirms that our democracy remains strong and vibrant.

The IEC update at 11h00 assured the nation that with a handful of exceptions, voting stations around the country started on time.

Media accreditation for Presidential Inauguration

Members of the media are invited to apply for media accreditation for the 2014 Presidential Inauguration.

Members of the media are advised that the pre-accreditation online registration process is accessible on https://www.gcis.gov.za/content/media-registration. The deadline for the pre- accreditation process for the Inauguration event is Thursday, 08 May 2014 at 16h00.
