Government commemmorates World Press Freedom Day

Government joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2023. This day is set aside across the globe to realise and raise the importance of press freedom. This year’s commemoration takes place under the theme, Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights, which signifies the enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights.

1.    SOUTH AFRICA INVESTMENT CONFERENCE 2023

1.1. Cabinet acknowledged the attainment of the R1.2 trillion investment mobilisation goal  that was set by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2018. Investment commitments made at the 5th South Africa Investment Conference enabled government to exceed the set target by R300 billion.

Government Communications saddened by death of three journalists

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) is deeply saddened by the death of three South African journalists.  Within a short time frame, South Africa lost News Free State editor Teboho Letshaba, veteran SABC News Sepedi Radio Current Affairs Producer and Presenter Matome Maupi in Limpopo, and former EWN reporter in Cape Town, Graig-Lee Smith.

Statement on the Cabinet discussions on energy of 19 April 2023

Cabinet was briefed about the current state of the electricity system as well as progress on the Energy Action Plan.

The meeting discussed short and medium-term measures to ensure energy security, taking into account our immediate energy needs.

Cabinet noted the presentation by Minister Ramakgopa and directed that a further assessment of the electricity situation and measures to be taken be addressed at the next NECOM meeting that will be convened as speedily as possible.

Media accreditation for the South African Investment Conference

South Africa will host its fifth SAIC on Thursday, 13 April 2023, at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Members of the media are informed that the media registration is now closed. No applications will be accepted at this stage.  

The following accreditation process will apply:

Government Communications on passing of former government communicator Mr Mbulelo Musi

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) is deeply saddened by the passing of former government communicator, Mbulelo Musi. 

He served in many roles in government including, the head of communications: Defence and Military Veterans, and as spokesperson at the Department of Social Development in 1999. He was also the former head of communication at the Department of Provincial and Local Government, what is now known as the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

Government saddened by death of Jeremy Gordin

The government expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jeremy Gordin, the renowned South African journalist and writer who was found dead in his home in Parkview, Johannesburg, on Friday, 31 March 2023.

According to the South African Police Services, an investigation is underway, and every possible avenue will be explored in the search for those responsible for Gordin’s death.
