The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), in partnership with the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster, will host a community activation in the North West province as part of Youth Month, under the sub-theme 'Promoting Physical and Mental Health by Reducing Risky Behaviours'.

This event coincides with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is observed annually on June 26 to strengthen global action and cooperation towards a world free from drug abuse.

Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations affecting women and children in South Africa. Despite existing legislation and national strategies, including the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on GBVF, victims continue to experience delays in accessing justice, poor service integration, and a lack of trauma-informed support. A collective national response is required to address institutional inefficiencies and restore public confidence.

Government welcomes Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance approval of the fiscal framework and revenue proposals that underpin the 2025 Budget. This ultimately enables the work of government to continue unabated. The South African government remains committed to a transparent and accountable budget process that aligns spending with national priorities, addresses socio-economic challenges, and ensures fiscal sustainability.

Government strongly condemns the shootout between illegal miners and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Riverlea, Johannesburg, which has claimed at least one life. A 59-year-old man was killed after he was allegedly caught in the crossfire as police exchanged gunfire with three suspects. Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. 

Government strongly condemns the violent scenes unfolding at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. This follows protests by students against the release on bail of the acting residence manager, Mr Manelisi Mampana, who is facing charges relating to the fatal shooting of a student during an earlier protest.
