Correction of Dr Shabalala birth year

Government has noted the extensive media coverage about the death of Dr Joseph Shabalala and his legendary music career during the build up to his official funeral, taking place on Saturday. It was also noted that his year of birth was reported incorrectly by the media. 

It must be placed on record that Dr Shabalala was born on 28 August 1940 and not in 1941. All media are requested to urgently correct the error.

1. 2020 State of the Nation Address (SoNA)

1.1. Cabinet welcomes the 2020 SoNA delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa at a Joint Sitting of the two houses in Parliament, Cape Town on Thursday, 13 February 2020. The address was delivered following the 30th anniversary of the release of the Father of the Nation, Tata Madiba, who walked free from Victor Verster Prison on 11 February 1990.

The Minister in the Presidency, Mr Jackson Mthembu   will on Thursday, 13 February 2020, conduct an information blitz and community engagement in Cape Town ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SoNA).

The engagements led by Minister Mthembu aim to ensure that government reports back on previous SoNA commitments and educate members of the public on what SoNA means to allow them to be better equipped to engage with the contents of the speech and how it impacts their lives.

1.  Cabinet decision

1.1 Alongside the three-day Cabinet Lekgotla held at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Tshwane from 29 to 31 January 2020, a Special Cabinet was held on Friday, 31 January 2020. 

1.2 The Minister of Public Service and Administration, Mr Senzo Mchunu, briefed Cabinet on the wage negotiations with the Public Service unions currently underway. A more extensive discussion on these negotiations will take place in the next sitting of Cabinet.

Government calls on media to apply for accreditation for Special Official Funeral of Dr Richard Maponya

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2 for esteemed business leader Dr Richard Maponya who will be buried on Tuesday, 14 January 2020 in Johannesburg, Gauteng.

Dr Maponya, widely respected as the doyen of black business, passed away on Monday 6 January 2020, a few days after celebrating his 99th birthday.

The President has directed that the National Flag fly at half-mast from Friday 10 January 2020 until the evening of the burial.
