1. Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant
1.1. Cabinet is conscious of the hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent public violence in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. In this regard, it reminded South Africans that applications for the country’s COVID-19 SRD Grant to support people who have no income opened on Friday, 6 August 2021.

Government sends condolences to struggle hero Mr Dan Sechaba Montsitsi

13 August 2021

Government is sadden by passing of 1976 struggle hero, Dan Sechaba Montsitsi. He is reported to have passed away from COVID-19 complications. Government sends its deepest condolence to his family and friends. 

Montsitsi was one of the leaders in the Soweto Student’s Representative Council (SSRC) that led the student marches against the encroachment of Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction in schools. His activism led to him being arrested in June 1977.

Government calls on all journalists to get vaccinated

The South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) in partnership with the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) and the National Department of Health wishes to call on all journalists to get vaccinated following the Health Ministry’s announcement today that the media sector can go get vaccinated at their nearest vaccination site.

South Africa congratulates Mr Patrick O’leary for his SADC Media Awards entry which won second prize in the photo category of the regional competition. The award was announced on 17 August by the outgoing Chairperson of SADC, His Excellency Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique, during the opening ceremony of the 41st SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government taking place in the Republic of Malawi.

Government saddened by passing of communication pioneer Sidwell Medupe

The GCIS is deeply saddened to hear about the untimely passing away of one of government’s communication foot soldier, Mr Sidwell Medupe, the Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition. He passed away this morning due to  COVID-19 complications.
