Portfolio Committee to conduct oversight visit to Department of Communications

The Department of Communications will host the Portfolio Committee on Communications at Tshedimosetso House, the seat of Government communication and home to the GCIS on Tuesday, 28 March 2017.

The Committee will be conducting an oversight visit to the Department of Communications and its entities from 28 – 31 March 2017. 

The Portfolio Committee will engage with members of the executive, staff and unions.

Government condemns violence against women

Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi, condemns the violence against women as reported in the media. Government is appalled and shocked by reports of horrific and unacceptable acts of violence and sexual assault faced by two women whilst commuting in taxis in Johannesburg. Further to this, women in Delft and Mthatha have been victims of taxi violence. We must work together to ensure that the public transport system is a safe environment for women who depend on this vital infrastructure to participate in the economy.

Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster welcomes Ugochukwu sentencing

The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster welcomes the Gauteng High Court’s land marking ruling in the case against Eke Ugochukwu. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on charges of trafficking a 15-year-old girl and forcing her into prostitution in Rosettenville two years ago.

Government welcomes ConCourt ruling on the payment of social grants

Government welcomes the Constitutional Court’s ruling that allows Cash Paymaster Services to continue paying social grants to eligible beneficiaries for another 12 months.

Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, expressed Government’s appreciation to the apex court. He said: “The South African government cares for its people and today’s ruling is indicative of a progressive democratic nation. Government accepts unconditionally the judgement and directives of the Constitutional Court.”

2017 SADC Media Awards and Water Awards competition: Call for entries

The South African media are invited to submit their entries for the 2017 SADC Media Awards Competition.

The Awards were established following a decision by the Council of Ministers in 1996 to establish a sector that deals with matters relating to amongst others, information, culture and sport. These awards serve as part of ensuring a link, coordination and synchronisation between formal structures of SADC governments, civil society, academia, labour and the media.
