Media briefing on visit by International Climate Envoys to South Africa: 21 July

21 July 2022 

The Head of the Presidential Climate Finance Task Team, Mr. Daniel Mminele, will host a joint media briefing together with climate envoys from the European Union, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The media briefing will provide an update on the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and the finalisation of an Investment Plan to guide South Africa’s just transition.

Government rejects Independent Group allegations

20 July 2022 

Government notes and rejects the malicious allegations made by the Independent Media Group’s head Iqbal Surve that President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Pravin Gordhan, a sitting Cabinet member, have applied political pressure and are using the banks to silence the media.

The Independent Group’s allegations are devoid of truth and seek to bring the President and the Minister into disrepute. Furthermore, the country has a formal banking system, which is highly regulated and accountable to regulators and industry bodies.

Government joins the world in celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day 2022

Today, the South African government joins the world in celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day, under the theme "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are".

2022 marks the 13th year since the United Nations General Assembly declared Nelson Mandela's 18 July birthday, International Nelson Mandela Day.  Following the declaration, Madiba called on everyone to honour him by helping their communities.

South Africa experienced violent civil unrest, mainly in parts of the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, between 8th and 17th July 2021. The unrest was characterised by social media mobilisation leading to looting, destruction of property and the disruption of economic activity.
