Board of Convocations and Alumni welcomes proposals from Minister Blade Nzimande and condemns violent protest on campuses
The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande met with the National Board of Convocations and Alumni today, 27 September 2016. The meeting was convened at the request of the board to brief the Minister about the initiatives that would be undertaken by the board in the higher education sector.

Government extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the contract worker at Witwatersrand University who died last week. The campus worker fell ill after protesting students released a fire extinguisher in Jubilee Hall residence.

The Economic Sectors, Employment and Infrastructure Development Cluster, chaired by Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti, will lead a media briefing to give an update on the progress made in the implementation of the cluster’s Programme of Action (PoA) towards achieving the goals of the NDP: Vision 2030.

Thank you for attending this media briefing. It is indeed an opportunity for us to update the nation about the progress we have made especially in the social protection and human development area of our work as government.
This briefing takes place at a time when Ministers are occupied with various programmes around the country and internationally.
Yesterday South Africa celebrated National Heritage Day under the theme: “Celebrating our Human Treasures by Asserting our African Identity”.
Government held a successful third Annual Thusong Service Centre Week which started on Monday, 19 September 2016 until Friday, 23 September 2016. The week was commemorated under Public Service Month theme “Moving the Public Service Forward: “We Belong, We Care, We Serve”.
The commemoration of the 20 year anniversary of the Constitution by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development formed a major part of the Thusong Service Centre Annual Week.

As tomorrow marks ‘Heritage Day, government calls on all citizens to promote their African Identity by dressing up in their traditional outfits, to share knowledge of cultures and learn a new African Language as part of celebrating our living heritage.

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, has noted with concern the calls from some sectors of students for no fee increase for all for the 2017 academic year. The Minister is equally concerned by the escalating violent protests taking place, particularly at the University of Witwatersrand, by fringe and rogue elements exploiting the situation through acts of hooliganism and criminality for their perverse agenda.
